In 1951, anticipating the civil rights movement, a 16-year-old African-American girl, Barbara Rose Johns, led a school strike against the County Board of Supervisors of Prince Edward County over the deplorable conditions at the all-black Moton High School. The ensuing lawsuit, named Davis v. Prince Edward, became part of the landmark US Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education, which ended de jure segregation in American public schools.
