Birth and death records can be found at the Virginia Department of Health; the fee is $12.00. Birth records are available to the public after 100 years; death, marriage, and divorce records, after 50 years. Before that time, such vital records are available only to immediate family. Formed in 1772, the county was originally named after Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore. After the American Revolution, British names were unpopular, and the county was reamed Shenandoah for the Senedos tribe.
