Sierra County is home to the well known town and county seat of Truth or Consequences. The town renamed itself in the 1950s after a popular radio program of the same name. The renaming was the result of a contest the show had announced, and Truth or Consequences won. A festival celebrating that win over 60 years ago continues to this day every year in the first weekend of May. The Sierra County Genealogical Society and the County Clerk's office both operate out of Truth or Consequences. The Society is headquartered at and has its historical archives at the local library at 325 Library Lane, and the Clerk's office is at 100 N. Date.
