Vital records are available to qualified individuals for $12.00 at the Virginia Department of Health. Records are eventually open to the public. The first Caucasian settlement in present-day Smyth County was the 1747 Royal Oak Survey. In 1832, the area was renamed Marion to honor General Francis Marion, the 'swamp Fox" of the Revolutionary War. Previously in the same year, Smyth County, named to honor General Alexander Smyth, was created from parts of Washington County and Wythe County.
