St. James Parish, LA Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records

St. James Parish, founded in 1807 as one of the original parishes in the state of Louisiana, is part of the Acadian Coast, Acadians being the precursor to the modern day Cajuns. It is home to the Oak Alley Plantation, a plantation built in 1837 which is now recognized as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The plantation was originally built to raise and harvest pecans and sugar case, however upon the conclusion of the Civil War and deprived of its labor force, the plantation went into financial ruin, trading owners several times until it was finally restored in 1925 and added as a Landmark.
