Before English colonization, the Patawomeck (Potomac) Band of the Powhatan empire lived in the eastern part of present-day Stafford County. In the western part of the county, Native Americans spoke Sioux; they were not part of the Powhatan Confederacy. Patawomeck descendants once hesitated to acknowledge their Indian heritage, but in more recent times they have become involved in researching historical accounts, property records, vital statistics, court records, and so on.
