Sumter County vital recordsSumter County vital records are at the Vital Records office of the Sumter Public Health Department. For $12 this office will provide certified copies of records 1915-present to family members only, when ordered in person or by mail (online through VitalChek). There is a free online index for 1915-1960 deaths on the state Department of Health website. Historical records (births 1641-1914; deaths 1641-1960) are at the state Department of Archives and History. Orders for pre-1950 marriage records should be made to the Sumter Probate Judge and orders for post-1949 divorce records to the County Clerk. Claremont, Clarendon, Lee, and Salem Counties were once part of Sumter County.
