Delaware vital records are available from the Office of Vital Statistics for $25 by check or money order. Delaware birth records are collated centrally since 1938; earlier records are in the Archives Hall of Records. Delaware death records are centralized since 1969, with data otherwise available from the Archives Hall of Records. In either case, a photo ID is required to obtain any Delaware vital records, with a copy attached to mail-order requests. Delaware is one of the original colonies, and the first to ratify the Constitution, giving it the nickname of the First State. It is also the second-smallest state, though it has three counties to Rhode Island's five. Delaware is the home of the Du Pont chemical manufacturer and longtime dynasty. The last member, Pierre du Pont, left public office in 1985.
