Washington County, NY Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records

Washington County vital recordsWashington County is one of 31 counties total in the United States named for Revolutionary War Commander in Chief and first President, George Washington. It was established in 1772 and was initially named Charlotte County, although the name was changed to its current one in 1784. Ironically, the county seat of Fort Edward was named after Prince Edward, the younger brother of King George III, the man who was King during the American Revolution. Fort Edward is home to the office of the County Clerk at 383 Broadway, and the Washington County Historical Society, located not far away at 167 Broadway. Both agencies have huge amounts of genealogical and historical records and documents on file, and both make those records available to the public for research. The Society also accepts remote research requests from those who can't visit their Heritage Research Library in person.
