Named for General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, Brigadier General in the Continental Army, Wayne County was created in 1842 from Cabell County. After Wayne's command defeated a force of Indians at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, Indian chiefs signed "Wayne's Treaty" in 1795, ending major hostilities in present-day West Virginia and along the Ohio River.
