The Patriots of Color collection is a summary of information so far collected about men and women of color who fought for American independence during the Revolutionary War as soldiers, seamen, wagoners, skilled craftsmen, servants, and laborers. Revealing their identities and individual stories is the goal of an extensive and ongoing research effort. This is only the beginning our research, and we wanted to make this collection of data available at the outset to encourage more research and scholarship. Funding for research was provided by Richard Gilder and the Gilder Lehrman Foundation, David Roux, Joseph Dooley and the Sons of the American Revolution, and the W. E. B. DuBois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University.
