Box Butte County, founded in 1886, is located towards the northwestern corner of Nebraska close to the Wyoming and South Dakota borders. The county seat of Alliance is home to the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center, a museum containing the Heritage Room, a research room filled with historical and genealogical records. The room has a large number of property records, marriage indexes, civil and criminal court docks from 1916 to 1948, and much more, along with a microfilm reader and public computer terminal. The museum is staffed by volunteers who are able to assist in locating specific records, as well as provide overall guidance, if needed. Additionally, the County Clerk is responsible for maintaining divorce and marriage records, along with military discharges, and probate records. The Clerk's office is housed in the Box Butte Courthouse at 510 Box Butte Ave in Alliance.
