The Dawes County Historical Society runs the Historical Museum at 341 Country Club Road in the county seat of Chadron, NE. Access to the museum for research is free, however donations are accepted. A large number of records are on file there, including original marriage certificates dated from 1885 till 1961, 71 volumes of criminal, civil, delayed birth, marriage, and probate books, property records, copies of newspapers from 1896 to 1972 on microfilm, and much more. Society volunteers will also locate records for those who can't visit the museum in person, and they accept requests either by mail or over the phone at (308) 432-4999. The county office of the Register of Deeds is combined with the County Clerk and also has property records, among other types, on file and will assist with those needing help with their research.
