One possibility is that the name derives from the Old English word "freo" or "frig", meaning "free" and denoting a person who did not belong to a lord. The other possibility is that it began with the Middle English word "fry", meaning a child or small person. Frye family history in the United States includes early settlers Adrian Frye, who settled in Maine in 1630, and William Frye, who settled in Virginia in 1635.
