Rivers is a French locational surname, and like many French names, was spread to England during the Norman Conquest in 1066. It comes from the Norman town of La Riviere, which itself means river, just as it looks, and supplanted the Old English words for river and stream, broc and ea. Rivers family history begins with Walter de la Riviere, noted in the rolls of Rievaux Abbey, Yorkshire, in 1150, and travels into the New World with John Rivers in 1684, who sailed to Bermuda.
