Vann Genealogy & History
Vann is an English topographical surname, from the Old English fenn, meaning a low-lying marshy area. It was used for people who lived in or near a marsh or fen. However, unlike some topographical names, it was not also the name of any settlement in a marsh. Vann family history enters the record books in 1199, when John del Fan was registered in the Pipe Rolls of Essex. Vann genealogy includes New York Court of Appeals Judge Irving Vann and Cherokee leader and businessman Joseph Vann.
