Hidalgo County records are maintained by the Hidalgo County Clerk (https://gov.propertyinfo.com/TX-Hidalgo/default.asp), who keeps originals of vital statistics; the state keeps copies. Records kept include birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, and other records. Texas began statewide recording in 1903. Certified copies of vital records are available to qualified applicants only in personmailed requests must be sent to the state (see http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/vs/default.shtm for instructions). Birth certificates are $23.00; death certificates are $21.00 for one, $4.00 for each additional copy requested at the same time.
