Only birth records older than 100 years and death records older than 50 years are open to the public, and since New Mexico did not start filing vital records until 1920, no birth records and only half of the death records are available to the general public for research. Those who qualify can apply for certified copies of both either at the office in person, through the mail, or online. Most other records, such as marriage and property, are kept by the De Baca County Clerk in the county seat of Fort Sumner, NM. All of the records on file with the Clerk are included in the public record, and staff can assist visitors in locating any specific items.
