The county was founded in 1683 as one of the original counties in the state. The County Clerk has records and historical documents on file that date as far back as 1719 and continue to the present, and all are open to the public with the exception of sealed documents. Among the records are naturalization documents, all manner of property records, and much more. Those wishing to obtain vital records, such as birth and death certificates, can do so by visiting the clerk of the town where the event occurred. The Dutchess County Genealogical Society provides a listing of all Dutchess County Registrars that have those types of records on file. The Society also operates a research library that contains a large number of records itself.
