The county has a sizable population of about 215,000, and the town of Lockport is the county seat. The Niagara County Genealogical Society operates a genealogical library in Lockport, NY, at 215 Niagara Street. The library houses about 2,000 historical record books which include family genealogies, property, census, and cemetery records, and a large variety of others. Use of the library is granted to anyone regardless of their membership with the Society, however the Look-Up Program the Society offers is limited to members exclusively. The program is basically a long distance research service for those who are unable to visit the library in person. Society members are granted one free 30 minute research period per year, and subsequent searches are $10 each.
