Salem City vital recordsThe office of the Salem Circuit Court Clerk can be contacted for record copies of marriages and divorces. These vital records are restricted to immediate family, to ensure privacy, for 50 years. Copies cost $3 for each marriage license and $.50/page for each divorce decree. The Virginia Department of Health can be contacted for copies of all vital records. Birth records are restricted for 100 years and death records for 50 years. Copies of these vital records cost $12. Founded as Salem in 1802, the previous half-century it was known under its colonial name of Fort Lewis. The Library of Virginia Archives maintains Salem's historical records.
