The Vital Statistics Registrar for Watonwan County is located within the County Recorder Department and is where individuals should go to obtain copies of vital and property records. The Recorder office is open to those wanting to research public records, as well, on Monday through Friday, from 8:30AM until 12:00PM, and again from 1:00PM until 5:00PM. The office also accepts requests for records through the mail, and provides the necessary forms online, however it is important to remember that applications for certified copies of records must be signed by a notary public before being sent in. The word watanwan, which is where the county derives its name from, was a Dakota word which meant "fish bait."
