The county seat, Evansham, became Wytheville in 1839. Long a crossroads of early transportation, it became a supply center for early settlers heading to the western frontier. Wytheville is the birthplace of many prominent citizens, notably Edith Bolling Wilson, known as the "first female American President" (after her husband, President Woodrow Wilson, was incapacitated by a stroke).
