Greenberg Genealogy & History

Greenberg is an Americanized version of Grnberg, which was originally a German locational name, referring to someone who lived in or near one of the many villages named Grnberg. The derivation of Grnberg is from "grn", meaning green, and "berg", meaning mountain, indicating a forest-covered mountain. Greenberg family history originated in Baden, and later Hesse, but there were also wool-weavers in Greenberg in Silesia, Poland, known as "grunberg merchants." In Greenberg genealogy there are many spelling variations including Grunberg, Gruenberger, Grunperger, and many are derived from the Ashkenazi Jewish Yiddish Grinberg. The first American Greenberg immigrant was Konstantin Grunenberg in 1650.
