The courthouse is in Menard, the county seat. Archeological evidence suggests that hunter-gatherers dwelled in the area 10,000 years ago. Apaches were present in the 1700s, Comanches in the 1800s. These Comanches resisted Spanish invasion and then the United States Army, but by 1870 the population was comprised mostly of blacks and whites. Most of those blacks had disappeared by 1880. Immigrants came primarily from England, Ireland, Germany, and Mexico. Menard County is one of the many counties formed from Bexar County.
