Pulaski County was created in 1839 from portions of Montgomery and Wythe Counties and named for Count Casimir Pulaski, an exiled Polish nobleman who came to America and joined George Washington's army in 1777, giving his life two years later for his adopted country. By the year 1840, the US sixth census showed that slightly over a fourth of the population of Pulaski County was enslaved.
