Vital records are available to qualified individuals for $12.00 at the Virginia Department of Health. Recently discovered archeological evidence shows that there once were permanent Native American villages in the area now known as Tazewell County. It became a valued hunting ground for the Cherokee Indian tribes in the south and the Shawnee tribes along the Ohio River. First farmed about 1770 by pioneers from Maryland, Tazewell became a Virginia county in 1799, named after U.S. Senator Henry Tazewell.
