Bradley is an early medieval locational English name, derived from Old English "bradleah", meaning broad meadow. Although the Bradley family history started in Lancashire where they had a family seat (feudal manor) since ancient times, and the first record de Bradelai in 1170 in Lincolnshire, places named Bradley are throughout England. Variations include Bradleigh, Broadley, Bruidley. James Bradley (1693-1762), astronomer royal, was from Durham, where the family owned Bradley Castle. The Irish Gaelic version of O'Brolachan is found in Tyrone, and the Scottish version Braidie in Roxburghshire. American Bradley genealogy began in 1634 in Maryland. The Bradley motto, "vigilance et audax" means vigilant and bold.
