Carney Genealogy & History

Carney family history originates in Ireland. There are many alternate spellings (such as Kearney, Carny, and Corney), but as Carney it is almost exclusively from County Mayo. The name derives from the Gaelic O'Catharnaigh, meaning the son of the warlike chief. The first recorded family member is Tadgh O'Catharnaigh in 1084 in County Meath. Interestingly, Carney genealogy can also include people with the surname "Fox," since the original O'Catharnaigh chief also had the nickname "An Sionnach," or "the fox," which became another surname. Early American family members include James Corney, who arrived in New York from Liverpool in 1847, during the great potato famine.
