Death, marriage, and divorce records become public after 50 years, birth records after 100. The Library of Virginia houses birth and death records (18531896) and marriage records (18531935). Established in 1792, Madison County was named for the family of statesman James Madison, who later become the fourth US president. Originally inhabited by Paleo-Indians, the area was settled by German, English and Scots-Irish families in the 18th century; many of their descendants still live in the area.
