Carroll Genealogy & History
Carroll family history is long and storied in Ireland and the United States especially. It is an anglicized version of the Gaelic name O'Cearbhaill. The Gaelic version goes back at least to the eleventh century, and refers to Cearbhal, the Lord of Ely who battled the Danes alongside King Brian Boru in 1014 at the Battle of Clontarf. The name may mean a butcher or warrior, from the Gaelic "cearbh" or "hacking." Carroll genealogy includes many notable people, including John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States, and Charles Carroll, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
