Mosher Genealogy & History

Mosher is an English name, one of several variants of the name Mauger, also spelled Moger and Major, which itself comes from the Old French Maugier and Old German Malger, a compound name meaning council-spear. As with many German and French names, it probably came to England with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Mosher family history begins in 1250, when John Mauger was enrolled in the Fees of Somerset. Some notable members of Mosher genealogy are chemist and Mosher's acid discoverer and namesake Harry Mosher, Scrabble inventor Alfred Mosher Butts, and early Oregon Associate Justice Lafayette Mosher.
