Richmond Genealogy & History
Richmond family history shows that this surname has two possible derivations. The first is a locational surname from the French "riche", meaning rich, and "mont", a hill, and can refer to any of several places in Northern France or England, especially Yorkshire. The second possibility is a patronymic derived from Richard, which means brave and strong. One of the earliest recordings of the name in Richmond genealogy is that of Roger de Richemund in 1199. The family seat in Yorkshire was located on a land grant from Duke William of Normandy in honor of the family's aid at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
